Acupuncture is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Taoist philosophy, which has been refined of the past 5000 years to presently integrate elements of contemporary western biomedical knowledge. As a system of medicine, TCM employs a variety of modalities, including acupuncture, to treat a diversity of ailments.
Acupuncture stimulates the balance and flow of Qi (vital energy) that in TCM is considered essential to health. When the body is healthy, Qi flows smoothly through the meridians that make up a network of pathways or channels throughout the entire body. When the balance or flow of Qi is deficient or obstructed it may be diseased or susceptible to illness. Based on the foundation of yin/yang, acupuncture treats both the symptoms and the root causes of the patient’s illness. Acupuncture uses with the five elements and eight principles to diagnose and treat imbalances in the meridians and internal organs. In western medicine, the yin/yang balance that acupuncture and other TCM modalities achieve is known as homeostasis.
The insertion of tiny needles in different areas of the body along channels or meridians releases muscle tension, alleviate pain, and regulate the nervous system. The needles remain in place for 20-40 minutes, depending upon your individual diagnosis. The use of a specialized TDP (infared heating lamp) or other modalities such as cupping (glass or silicon cups used to provide tissue suction or a "reverse massage" ), tui na (Chinese massage), gua sha (gentle skin scraping with a jade tool), moxibustion (burning of the herb mugwort), and Traditional Chinese medicine dietary and lifestyle guidance may be added to your treatment to maximize the healing potential. It should not be painful but a variety of sensations will be experienced depending upon the individual. This Acupuncture treatment will include an initial intake and evaluation of your condition and create a diagnosis that will guide treatments.

Tessa first experienced the effects of acupuncture when she sustained a sports injury to her back. She was blown away by the soothing effects of the needles and cups, and would fall asleep on the table during most sessions. Soon after, she was back on the wrestling mats competing and from then the medicine took root in her mind. Studying acupuncture called to her not only for its multifaceted perspectives on health but also as an avenue to explore her heritage.

Now, having graduated from Pacific Rim College in Victoria, she is eager to share this mode of medicine with her patients. She looks forward to working collaboratively with them and is honored for the opportunity to hold space for healing and growth.

Megan is convinced that being a registered massage therapist is the best job ever and believes that doing what you love is the greatest gift that you can give to the world.

Megan was born and raised on Vancouver Island and feels blessed to still call it home. She is a 2012 graduate of the West Coast College of Massage Therapy’s 3,000-hour RMT program and is a member in good standing with the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia. She has taken a wide spectrum of continuing education courses focused on the treatment of athletic injuries, soft tissue damage from motor vehicle accidents, TMJ dysfunction, tension headaches, low-back pain, repetitive strain injuries, as well as pre and post natal care.

Her philosophy is to treat the body as a whole, addressing both the symptoms and underlying cause of dysfunction in order to decrease both physical and emotional stress. Her intention with each treatment is to acknowledge the intelligence of the body, and to work with it, not against it. She often incorporates trigger point therapy, muscle energy techniques, joint mobilizations, myo-fascial release and facilitated stretching into her practice. Megan hopes that you leave each session with a solid understanding of what’s currently going on in your body, why it’s happening and what you can do to prevent it in the future.

Outside of the treatment room, Megan enjoys road trips, destination marathon races, strengthening her yoga practice, volunteering with Pacific Rim Hospice and going for beach walks with her golden retriever, Bailey. She strongly believes in the integration of other therapies, such as physiotherapy, acupuncture and chiropractic care for optimal results. She’s very enthusiastic about self care and believes its absolutely essential in becoming the healthiest version of yourself. Megan is grateful for the opportunity to share her knowledge with the community and looks forward to being a part of your health care plan!
